According to Wikipedia and many other sources, the human body is made up of a great deal of water, some 55% for adult females, and 60% for adult males, so does it make sense to lose water weight to show a loss of weight on the scales, and a change of clothes size? Blood contains nearly 50% water, and lean muscle tissue and bones significantly more.
There is a reason for this, the body needs water to be healthy. A significant fraction of the human body is water. Lean muscle tissue contains about 99% water by weight. Blood contains almost 50% water, body fat contains 1/2% water and bone has 97% water. Skin also contains much water. The human body is about 60% water in adult males and 55% in adult females.
If you feel that your body is retaining too much water because your ankles, feet, legs and perhaps even your wrists and hands also swell, then you need to check in with your doctor to find out what is happening and why. It could be diet related, or it could be a side effect of a prescription drug you are taking under the doctors orders, so you need to find out for sure.
Strange as it may sound, if your body is not receiving enough water, it will try to hold on to the water that it does have, and you will get bloated with water, and gain water weight. So to reduce this you need to drink more water regularly so your body is no longer in survival mode, and you should lose some of that water weight.
You may also find that you are eating too much salt in your diet. A diet which is high in sodium will cause your body to retain water, and add to the problem of water weight. Have a look at what you eat. If you prepare all your meals from scratch then it is easy to reduce your sodium intake, but if you eat a lot of prepackaged foods, tinned or frozen, take a look at the label and you will probably see a high salt or sodium content. The human body does not need very much salt at all, only about one teaspoonful each day, and if you take in more than that, then your body will retain more water. So try to reduce the sodium in foods you buy ready made, by choosing the low sodium options now available.
Eat a well balanced diet, with plenty of fruits and vegetables since the potassium in them can help to prevent or treat the retention of water. Fruit and vegetables are good for their fibre too of course, and can provide all the sweetness you need in your diet, rather than eating a lot of sugar products.
Try to exercise more, as by cycling, walking or running you can help your body to get rid of any excess water that it has.
If after trying these ways to lose water weight you are still retaining water, then you need to make sure to visit your doctor in case there is an underlying health issue that needs investigating.
